Sports Day: little legs, big hearts

Our annual Magic Moments Sports Day brought out the very best in our tiny athletes, and — if we do say so ourselves — the very best in our parent supporters too. From the perfectly clear Queensburgh morning weather to the last medal ceremony after lunch, it was a day this school will not forget in a hurry.

The morning kicked off with a mini warm-up on the playground, complete with stretches led by our Kinderkinetics coach, star jumps, a very serious round of 'touch your toes', and a school-wide chorus of a warm-up song that we practise every Friday. Parents on the sidelines were quietly recruited into a shadow warm-up of their own.

From there, it was straight into the events. The Toddler dash — twenty metres in a slightly zig-zag line towards a familiar adult — was the crowd favourite for cuteness. Nursery took on the classic egg-and-spoon race with impressive concentration and one memorable dramatic finish involving an eggshell casualty. The sack race is always chaos and this year did not disappoint.

Grade R stepped up to the parent-and-child relay, which turned out to be one of the most competitive events of the morning. Some parents took the challenge remarkably seriously — quiet dad in the corner, we are looking at you — and by the end of the second heat, more than one adult had swapped their smart Saturday flats for barefoot serious business on the grass.

The Grade R obstacle course was the grand finale. Balance beams, cones, tunnels, agility hoops, a bean-bag toss and a triumphant flag to grab at the end — each little athlete pushed themselves through with wonderful determination. The teachers cheered every runner across the finish and there were absolutely no losers on the day.

Between events we ran mini activity stations — face painting, a beanbag toss, a slow-cycling race with the tiny bikes, and a chill-out corner in the shade for anyone who needed a break. The bake sale table (run entirely by our devoted parent volunteers) sold out of cupcakes within the first hour, and the boerewors roll queue snaked halfway around the field.

Every child got a chance to run, cheer and be cheered for. Every child came home with a medal, a small gift bag, a juice, and cheeks flushed from a morning well spent. We deliberately do not do 'first place' and 'last place' at this age — the goal is participation, effort, courage to try and pride in being part of it. Judging by the tired smiles at home time, it worked.

Sports Day is also quietly a big physical development milestone. Running, hopping, throwing, catching, balancing and coordinating with a partner all build the gross motor foundations that will serve our children well through Big School and beyond. It is also a bonding moment for classes — cheering your friend to the finish line is a small act of loyalty that sticks.
