Inside the Baby Room: the magic of sensory play

Step into our Baby Room on any given morning and you will find our tiniest Magic Moments explorers deep in the very serious business of learning through their senses. The atmosphere is deliberately calm, the lighting is soft, the music is gentle and the pace matches the rhythm of babies rather than the ticking clock of the outside world.

Everything in this room has been chosen with intention. Light-up sensory cubes that respond to a gentle push. Textured floor mats — rough and smooth, warm and cool, spiky and silky — perfect for tummy time and early crawling. Soft musical instruments in a basket. Water-and-oil bottles to squish, shake and roll. Low, unbreakable mirrors that let babies discover their own faces, a moment of pure magic every single time.

The room is set up in zones. A calm feeding-and-cuddling corner with rockers and comfortable chairs. A safely padded floor area for tummy time, rolling and early crawling exploration. A slightly elevated 'sitting-up' area with sturdy activity centres for babies working on those first big trunk-strengthening milestones. A dedicated sleep corner with cots, gentle white noise and blackout blinds.

Our baby teachers do not follow a rigid schedule. Instead, we follow each individual baby's rhythm for feeds, naps, tummy time and cuddles. We keep detailed daily diaries so you know exactly how much your little one drank at each feed, how long they slept, whether they had a nappy adventure, what activities they enjoyed and what new little thing they did today. There are no missing pieces at pick-up time.

Sensory play is at the very heart of how babies learn. Every new texture, sound, smell, taste and visual pattern lays down neural connections that will underpin all later learning. That is why our teachers offer intentional sensory experiences every day — a bowl of cool, dry rice to scoop and dribble (under close supervision), pretend edible finger paint made from yoghurt, crinkly paper to squeeze, herb sprigs to smell.

We also protect proper tummy time every single day. It is the single most important motor exercise a baby under one can do, building the neck, shoulder and back strength that underpins rolling, sitting, crawling, standing and eventually walking. Our teachers know exactly how much tummy time is appropriate for each stage, and they make it fun with mirrors, textured mats and one-on-one face-to-face play.

Music runs quietly through the day, and it is chosen carefully. Gentle acoustic songs in the mornings for arrivals, upbeat but not overwhelming tunes for active play, calm classical or soft African lullabies before naps. We sing directly to the babies too — one-on-one, holding little hands, watching their eyes light up with recognition of a familiar tune.

We take health and hygiene very seriously in the Baby Room. Toys are cleaned between children and thoroughly sanitised at the end of each day. Bottles are labelled, refrigerated and prepared with strict protocols. Nappies are changed on wipe-down surfaces with fresh gloves for each change. If a baby is unwell, we call you immediately — we would rather be over-cautious than under.

Settling a new baby into the Baby Room is done with enormous care. We recommend a phased approach with short stays that gradually extend over one to two weeks. Our teachers work closely with each family to learn your baby's cues, routines and comforts. We use your familiar sleep bag, your familiar bottle, your favourite lullaby if you send us one. It matters.
