Our outdoor classroom: a peek at our garden play space

One of the things families notice first when they walk through Magic Moments for a school tour is how much thought and care has gone into our outdoor space. It is not just a strip of grass with a swing set. It is a purposely designed, ever-evolving outdoor classroom — a place where the tree canopy, the sensory tables, the mud kitchen and the wind chimes are all part of a bigger learning ecosystem.

Shady old trees form the backbone of the space. We are lucky to have several mature indigenous trees along the boundary that provide cool shade even on the hottest Durban days. Underneath them, we have positioned quieter play zones — the sandpit, the mud kitchen, the small reading nook with cushioned tree stumps and a basket of outdoor books.

The mud kitchen is a firm favourite. Old pots and pans, wooden spoons, upcycled utensils, tea sets, a small water tap and a permanent 'menu board' invite endless creative cooking play. Children spend hours here making pretend cakes, soups, wedding feasts and mysterious potions. It is imaginative play, fine motor training and role-playing all in one gloriously grubby corner.

Colourful wind chimes hang from the branches. We chose them not just for the pretty sound, but because they encourage children to look up, to listen carefully, to notice the wind, and to have gentle sensory input woven into their outdoor time. Some of our tuning-in-focused Kinderkinetics activities begin around the wind chimes.

Sensory tables at just the right height rotate their contents through the term — kinetic sand, pouring stations, dried lentils and rice, water and floating flowers, ice blocks with hidden treasures, autumn leaves, seed pods. Each new set-up sparks a fresh burst of exploration and vocabulary, and no two weeks look the same.

The bike track loops gently through the space, wide enough for two ride-on toys to pass one another and long enough to feel like a real adventure. It doubles as a running track for race games, an obstacle course when we lay out cones, and a natural boundary between the more active and quieter zones of the playground.

Splash bins come out on hot days. Big shallow tubs filled with cool water, small floating toys, cups and jugs for pouring, and lots of space around each bin so children can splash without soaking one another. Simple, low-cost, low-tech, and endlessly loved by every age group in the school.

We also have a small vegetable and herb patch that our Grade R class helps to plant and tend each term. It has hosted spinach, cherry tomatoes, radishes, basil, mint and — one memorable term — a spectacularly successful pumpkin. Children who watch food grow tend to eat it far more happily, and the maths of counting seeds and measuring growth is a lovely bonus.

The whole outdoor space is fully fenced, gated and secure. Access is controlled from the office and no child leaves the playground unaccompanied. Equipment is inspected regularly and refreshed on a rolling schedule so that the space keeps evolving rather than stagnating. Parent feedback and children's own play preferences quietly shape what changes next.
