Kinderkinetics in action: building strong little bodies

Our SAPIK-registered Kinderkinetics programme uses play-based movement to boost coordination, balance and confidence.

Kinderkinetics in action: building strong little bodies

One of the things that quietly makes Magic Moments a little different from other preschools in Queensburgh is our on-site Kinderkinetics programme, run by a fully qualified, SAPIK-registered (South African Professional Institute for Kinderkinetics) practitioner. It is not an optional add-on tacked onto the end of the day — it is woven into the weekly rhythm of the school.

For families who have never heard of it before, Kinderkinetics is a scientifically grounded approach to child development through targeted physical activity. It works with the way young brains and bodies grow together: the more richly a child moves in their early years, the more strongly the neural pathways for learning, attention, reading and writing later develop. Movement is not opposite to learning — it is the launchpad for it.

During a typical session, our practitioner sets up small stations around the hall or playground. Obstacle courses of cones, hoops and low beams, agility ladders on the floor, hop-scotch grids, big soft therapy balls, bean bags, mini scooter boards and low tunnels are all rotated week by week. Children move through the stations in small groups, guided with just enough challenge to keep every child stretched.

The focus areas are deliberately broad: balance (both static and dynamic), coordination (hand-eye, foot-eye and hand-foot), laterality (knowing left from right without hesitation), midline crossing (which is fundamental for reading), spatial awareness, core stability, muscle tone and postural control. Under all of that sits confidence — the quiet belief that 'my body can do this'.

For children who are already meeting all their developmental milestones, Kinderkinetics is a fun, high-energy weekly extra that gives them a real physical edge. They arrive in Grade R stronger, better balanced, more coordinated and — importantly — more used to focused physical activity than most of their peers. Big School PE and after-school sport benefit enormously.

For children who are struggling in specific areas — noticeable clumsiness, bumping into things, avoiding physical challenge, poor concentration, tiring very quickly, difficulty with pencil work, delayed toilet skills, poor posture, weak core or ongoing motor delays — Kinderkinetics can be genuinely life-changing. It is often the missing piece that makes therapy, remedial work and even social confidence click into place.

Sessions are always play-based. You will not find frowning children lined up doing formal exercises. You will find giggling, wide-eyed little people crawling through tunnels, hopping like frogs, walking a beam like a tightrope, tossing bean bags into hoops and — crucially — asking to do it again. The 'medicine' is delivered through joy, which is why it works so well at this age.

For families who would like a formal assessment, our Kinderkinetics practitioner offers short, non-invasive, play-based motor screenings. The assessment identifies areas of relative strength and areas that would benefit from focused input, and produces a friendly written summary you can share with your paediatrician, therapist or Grade R teacher if useful. There is no pressure, no jargon, no scary chart.

The programme also links closely with our Remedial support. Where an occupational therapist, speech therapist or educational psychologist is involved, our Kinderkinetics practitioner will happily collaborate — sharing observations, aligning activities and reinforcing the same skills across settings. It is one of the reasons parents so often tell us they feel their child is truly seen and supported here.

If you would like to know whether your child would benefit from joining a session, chat to your class teacher first or contact our office to set up a screening. And if you are simply curious to see what a session looks like, we are always happy to have parents observe. It is one of the more inspiring hours you will spend at the school.
