Heritage Day: proudly celebrating who we are

Heritage Day at Magic Moments is one of the most colourful, joyful and photograph-heavy mornings of our entire year — and 2025 absolutely did not disappoint. From the moment the first car pulled through the gate, the playground began to fill up with a small, beautiful, proudly South African rainbow.

The children arrived in the most gorgeous outfits. There were traditional Zulu beadwork necklaces and headbands, brightly coloured Indian kurtas and tiny sarees held together with more safety pins than fabric, Xhosa isishweshwe dresses in every conceivable pattern, Afrikaans boere-outfits with checked shirts and little bandanas, Portuguese lace, Congolese wax prints and everything in between. Even the teachers came dressed to the nines.

Older siblings and grandparents dropped off with extra cameras, and Janine spent much of the first half hour just standing at the gate greeting families and admiring the effort. It is one of the days of the year when parents most visibly beam with pride, and it always makes for the very best group photograph.

In the classrooms, teachers shared short, age-appropriate stories from different South African cultures. The Baby Room listened to gentle Zulu lullabies. The Toddlers learned three words in five different languages and practised saying 'hello' and 'thank you' in each. Nursery explored the meanings behind different traditional outfits, and Grade R made a giant paper flag collage that now hangs proudly in the corridor.

The food table was, unsurprisingly, a highlight. The children tasted a rainbow of little snacks with big cultural stories behind them — koeksisters, samoosas, chakalaka on toast, boerewors bites, roti squares, pap and gravy in tiny cups, Indian sweets, and even a tiny taste of amasi for the brave. The kitchen team worked from early morning to plate everything up prettily, and there were remarkably few complaints from our fussiest eaters.

Music and dance stitched the whole morning together. We ended in the hall with a proudly-South-African playlist and let the children go — from gumboot-inspired stomps and impromptu isicathamiya harmonies (led by our very musical Grade R teachers), to Bhangra spins and a full-blown Afrikaans langarm from one very confident four-year-old. Teachers formed a circle around the children and cheered every song.

For our school, Heritage Day is far more than a fancy-dress day. It is one of the concrete ways we teach our children that being different is beautiful, that every family in the class carries a rich story worth celebrating, and that all of these stories belong under the same South African roof. In a country still learning to hold its diversity gracefully, we take that job very seriously.

A huge thank you to every parent who took the time to dress their child in something meaningful and to tell them a little about why. Watching our little ones stand a little taller in the clothes of their heritage, and hearing them proudly explain to their teacher what each piece meant, is exactly what this day is about.
